The Wedding Planning Dream
There must be few little girls who have not played the game of being a bride. Dressing up in whatever old sheets and tea cloths they can lay their hands on and practicing the elegant walk down the aisle. In their minds eye, they can see the perfect dress, the bridesmaids’ outfits, the church, the flowers, the smiling relatives. Prince Charming is waiting at the altar. After the ceremony, it’s off to the reception, the beautifully dressed tables, the cake, and the two tiny figures on top. It’s all pictured in minute detail, perfect each time with nothing going wrong.
The reality is very different. Most relatively small weddings end up being arranged by the bride and some of her female relatives. They probably have little experience of planning an event on such a scale. There are so many details to attend to and everything has to coordinated so that it all comes together on the big day. It can lead to months of stress, wondering if you’ve forgotten anything or what might go wrong at the end of it. No wonder that if they can afford it, people are turning to professional wedding planners. A wedding planning career has become an enjoyable and rewarding possibility.
Are You Cut Out for a Wedding Planning Career?
Before you think about the skills necessary for a successful wedding planning career, do you have the personality for it? You will be asking couples to hand over responsibility for the biggest day of their lives to you. That means that you have to quickly develop rapport with them. They need to like and trust you. You have a short time to get across your confidence in your ability and let them know that you can remain calm under pressure and deal with any problems that may arise. You will also need to be able to deal with caterers, printers and florists in a professional but forceful manner to make sure that they deliver on time.
In an undertaking as big as a wedding, there is always likely to be something that goes wrong and you will have to assume responsibility and make sure that it doesn’t ruin the day. You may also have to pour oil on the troubled waters between warring relatives.
Wedding Planning Career Skills
So what else do you need? A flair for design and a finger on the pulse of the latest trends would be good. Knowing what style of wedding dress is in. It would help to have some knowledge of catering. You will need to be able to illicit what the couple really want and then make sure they are delighted with what they can afford. Perhaps some knowledge of different religious traditions and customs would be useful. And finally, the business savvy to negotiate good deals with suppliers. If that sounds like you, a wedding planning career could be right up your street.
